PLAY!Book, 2024
Authors: Janna Bystrykh, Sanne van den Breemer
PLAY! is a reflection on the culture of playground design. Urban playgrounds form a vast, intricate spatial and social network. Increasingly influenced by standards and regulations, and under growing pressure in limited urban public spaces, they risk fading into the background, despite their vital role in public life and social interaction. They facilitate professional collaborations, material innovations, and opportunities for climate mitigation and nature-positive design.

Through a photo documentation of playgrounds across Rotterdam, PLAY! captures the environment of play – an amalgamation of ideas, dreams, and efforts – interwoven with curated conversations with playground creators, designers, environmental experts and urban thinkers. PLAY! highlights progressive practices, concepts and ideas, and sparks a conversation about the future of public play landscapes, emphasizing their role in climate and nature restoration and fostering cohesive social spaces in urban areas.

“Does Your Soil Have a Smell?”: Experiences of Regenerative Farming across the Great Plains!
Book chapter, 2025
Authors: Janna Bystrykh and Clemens Driessen
Often seen as flyover country, the Great Plains in the US appears as the center of large-scale, industrial and technology driven agriculture. This chapter, based on an extensive interview-based documentary project with farmers in the region, is also a groundbreaking site for efforts to transition towards regenerative farming and community practices.Regenerative farming focuses on restoration of soil through changes in farming practices that help restore organic matter and biodiversity in the soil. Many of the farmers we interviewed share an intimate understanding of their soil life, including the ways through which different plants can influence each other when planted in proximity and/or sequentially. At the same time, many of these farmers are active in their local and regional rural and farming communities, trying to help reshape the food system and associated livelihoods in rural areas.Through three interviews presented in this chapter, we reflect on the lived experiences and visions of influential voices who, each in their own way, are driving the movement of regenerative agriculture across the Great Plains. Their accounts offer layered narratives of the close connections between soil and communities, biodiversity and society, economic regeneration and regeneration of the soil and land – with a deep sense of historical injustices and possible futures.

	CROPSCAPES
2023
Endless green meadows may seem monotonous. With an untrained eye it can be difficult to detect variation in these landscapes and the multitudes of grass species.

CROPSCAPES project, gripped by the story of grass and histories of meadows, explores the diversity of plant species that make up the regenerative and biodynamic agricultural fields of Friesland, in conversation with farmers and botanists.

‘And So Now We’re At a Bustling Thirty-Seven!’
Preservation by Regeneration in Nicodemus, Kansasin OASE 117 Project Villages, Maarten Liefhooghe, Sereh Mandias, Stefan Devoldere (eds.)
Chapter, 2024Authors: Janna Bystrykh and Clemens Driessen in conversation with Angela Bates and Dr JohnElla Holmes
Nicodemus was founded in 1877 by African Americans as the first and only remaining Black settlement in Kansas. Throughout its history, Nicodemus has adapted to changing social, political and economic conditions. Founded as a new town with an agricultural base, Nicodemus became a commuter town in the 1940s and 1950s as land ownership declined due to racist policies. Finally, in 1996, Nicodemus became a National Heritage Site. The article tells the story of Nicodemus through interviews with Angela Bates, Nicodemus descendant, historian, founder and executive director of the Nicodemus Historical Society and Museum, and Dr JohnElla Holmes, president and executive director of the Kansas Black Farmers Association. What emerges from the interviews is a form of rural community regeneration through multidisciplinary preservation and community-based practices. The vision for the future of Nicodemus involves certain practices of heritage, where spatial planning cannot be seen in isolation from the stories that people feel are important to tell.

OASE 117. Project VillageAuthor: Stefan Devoldere, Maarten Liefooghe, Sereh Mandias (ed.)Publisher: nai010ISBN: 978-94-6208-839-9Publishing date: May 2024
A surprising historical frame of reference for modern and contemporary village projects.Does the village still meaningfully function as a model in times of general urbanization? The histor of architecture and urban design has not paid enough attention to the village. Nor has the contemporary architecture debate, which continues to be dominated by the avant-garde, urbanity, institutional building types and urban repurposing. Recently, however, the village has received more attention, partly because of the growing demand for spatial densification, climate challenges and biodiversity. There is a need for a qualitative approach to village densification in the Netherlands and Belgium as well as a growing interest in preserving and restoring the identity of villages and landscapes.OASE 117 contributes to the debate on the architecture and urban design of villages, examining them not as the antithesis of modernity, but as its complex product. Eight essays analyse images, inventories, idealizations and makeovers of villages in the changing sociopolitical contexts of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

Industrial Farming Blues
2019
Conversations with farmers of all stripes, from the industrial-scale to the regenerative, in rural North Dakota and Minnesota, August 2019. Lanny Faleide, a farmer who created Satshot—one of the first satellite analysis companies for agriculture—together with his wife Lisa Swanson Faleide, a writer and theologian, were the connection and collaborators in this conversation marathon on technology, farming, and community. Emotions were high: trade tensions with China were escalating. Confronted with unstable prices, some farmers will go even bigger in the race to survive. Others are choosing new directions: smaller, smarter, regenerative; scripting and automating to improve soil health, biodiversity, crop diversity, and water quality.
